MVT Solutions Certified™ found the Michelin X One tire package saved 6.70 gal/1000 miles (5.35%) compared to the Bridgestone Greatec package. In 125,000 miles, this equates to 837.50 gallons of fuel saved. At $3.056 per gallon (2019 average retail price of diesel) this equates to $2,559.40 in fuel savings. Depending on the difference in tire purchase costs and tire life, the ROI can vary from 2.8 months to 4.7 months. Overall, this test highlights how much fuel can be saved between tire brands and why fleets should be factoring this in their purchase and cost per mile calculations.
Note: this test and report were not created to discredit Bridgestone tires in any way! Comparison tires were required for this test and Bridgestone was chosen since it is a leading competitive brand. Other tire brands may show even greater differences in fuel consumption and cost savings.
Testing was conducted at 72,000 lbs. GVW and 65 mph. All tires were Line Haul, SmartWay approved fuel efficient tires and are considered equal competitors. The report contains guides on calculating savings for difference GVW’s.
