MVT Solutions Certified™ conducted a comprehensive fuel economy assessment to evaluate the differences in fuel efficiency across three regional tire configurations from Michelin, Bridgestone, and Goodyear. The study aimed to provide fleets with reliable data to optimize fuel consumption and reduce operating costs.

The Michelin XMZ2|XMED|XMET2 configuration demonstrated the highest fuel efficiency, delivering a 4.61 gallons per 1,000 miles (3.37%) advantage over the Bridgestone R268|M760|R196A configuration and a 7.73 gallons per 1,000 miles (5.65%) improvement over the Goodyear RSA|G572|RST configuration.

Over an annual distance of 125,000 miles, the Michelin configuration would save 577 gallons compared to Bridgestone, equating to $2,431 in cost savings at an average fuel price of $4.214 per gallon, and 967 gallons compared to Goodyear, translating to $4,075 in annual savings. These reductions also contribute to significant environmental benefits, with annual CO₂ emissions reductions of 5.87 metric tons over Bridgestone configuration and 9.84 metric tons over Goodyear configuration. The results highlight the critical impact of tire selection on fuel efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability.

The testing was conducted under controlled conditions to ensure accuracy and reliability. Vehicles were tested at a constant speed of 65 MPH on a 9-mile private track in Texas, with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 79,000 lbs. All vehicles were equipped with dual 11R/22.5 tires in new condition, which underwent a standardized 500-mile break-in period before testing commenced.

These findings highlight the significant impact that tire configurations can have on fuel efficiency, cost savings, and environmental sustainability. By selecting the optimal tire setup, fleets can enhance their profitability while reducing their carbon footprint.
