MVT Solutions Certified™ testing measured fuel savings for BASF Emgard® 7103 XFE 75W-85 axle lubricant on two different truck models. This new lubricant improved fuel efficiency by 0.67 gal/1000 miles (0.50%) on a Freightliner Cascadia and 1.14 gal/1000 miles (0.90%) on a Peterbilt 579. This lubricant is commercially available through BASF and is currently rebranded by Tier 1 suppliers in the trucking industry. Fleets can request this lubricant for their new equipment or can retrofit their current vehicles. If their OEM does not provide this BASF option, fleets can contact MVTS for assistance.
MVTS Solutions Certified™ testing also measured the effect of the Emgard® 7103 XFE 75W-85 on the temperature of the vehicles’ drive axles. This new lubricant reduced the temperature of the Freightliner Cascadia’s front and rear drive axles by 2.6°C (3.3%) and 4.8°C (5.9%) and reduced the temperature of the Peterbilt’s front and rear drive axles by 1.4°C (1.7%) and 2.7°C (3.2%), respectively.
The BASF axle lubricant tests were compared to existing BASF axle lubricant Emgard® FE 75W-90 (aka E2986), which is readily used in the trucking industry.
Testing was conducted on a 41-mile interstate loop in New Mexico at 65 MPH. The tractors were both modern Class 8 sleepers with under 2,000 miles on their odometers. The first tractor was a 2025 Freightliner Cascadia with a DD15 engine, DT12 transmission and Meritor 6×4 drive axle configuration with a 2.47 final ratio. The second tractor was a 2025 Peterbilt 579 with a Cummins X15 engine, Eaton Endurant EEO-17F112C transmission and Meritor 6×4 drive axle configuration with a 2.85 final ratio. Both tractors were pulling 53-foot Hyundai dry van trailers and were ballasted to a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of approximately 65,000 lbs.
During testing, axle lubricants were changed with a double flush procedure to ensure all prior lubricants were removed and comparison tests were identical.
Results for Any Carrier
Carriers can trust the test results are reliable for other tractor-trailer configurations, as they are not specific to MVTS fleet. During testing, vehicles were configured to represent the current industry-standard and did not include wheel covers or tractor wheel side fairings. Carriers can find directions on calculating their own fuel savings in the report or can contact MVT Solutions with questions.
Independent Third Party Testing
MVT Solutions fuel economy testing is independent, 3rd party testing. We do not receive any payment from the sale of products tested. To learn more about the test, view the report above or contact us.
