MVT Solutions Certified™ testing found the Range Energy RA-01 powered 53-ft dry van trailer improved fuel economy 36.3% (3.82 MPG) with the system activated versus not activated. Testing was conducted on an Urban/Highway loop at approximately 59,000 lbs. GVW and 60 mph top speed. Test results do not account for additional weight or parasitic drag of the Range trailer drivetrain.

How it Works

The Range Energy system utilizes an electric-powered drive axle on the trailer to reduce the drag forces acting on the tractor and therefore reduce the diesel fuel consumed by the tractor pulling the trailer. The Range Energy trailer has a uniquely designed system where the trailer is always in a state of ‘pull’ so driving the tractor feels normal and as if the load is simply lighter.

The Range Energy trailer includes a battery pack to power the electric axle, which was fully charged prior to testing. As with any electric vehicle or hybrid, the improvement in fuel economy was not necessarily ‘free’ energy due to the requirement of battery charging, however, the expectation is that electric charging is more environmentally clean and cost-effective than a diesel-powered equivalent.

Test Results

The diesel fuel economy improvement of 36.3% (3.82 MPG) was over the average of the 25.5-mile loop (termed ‘Scenario 3’ by MVTS). When comparing the stop/go portions of the loop only, the savings were 36.9% (3.25 MPG), termed Scenario 1 and constituting 7.1 miles of the loop. When comparing only the flat steady-speed portions of the loop, the savings were 35.3% (4.69 MPG). This constituted 12.5 miles of the loop. Which values apply to a fleet will depend on their duty cycle or combination of the values listed, however, the range was 35.3% – 36.9% (4.69 MPG – 3.82 MPG).

Fuel savings by the Range Energy trailer can also be expected to increase range of the tractor, which could pertain to electric or fuel-powered vehicles. Range was not quantified in the MVTS test and may be considered for future testing.
