In 2019, MVT Solutions Certified™ testing found the Michelin Energy Guard saved 10.00 gal/1000 miles (8.75%) with tandems at the 40-foot mark; savings were 10.93 gal/1000 miles with the tandems fully back. The Michelin Energy Guard was tested back-to-back with trailer skirt and boat tail packages and found to achieve only 0.73 gal/1000 miles (0.71%) less in fuel savings. Two separate tests in 2020 showed the Michelin Energy Guard saved 10.31 gal/1000 miles (7.65%) and 10.79 gal/1000 miles (9.09%). The lower 7.65% value occurred when the test was conducted with a heavier load (i.e., higher GVW). The higher GVW resulted in more fuel consumed, which reduced the percent fuel savings despite almost identical actual gallons of fuel saved. The 10.79 gal/1000 miles test was conducted with dual tires as opposed to Wide Based Singles (WBS) used on the previous two tests. The slightly greater width of the dual tire package resulted in slightly greater savings.
Overall, we have remained very impressed with the Michelin Energy Guard solution, since it has significant fuel savings and has some key features that fleets have requested for a long time.
Features We See Valuable with the Michelin Energy Guard System
There are several key features that make this system stand out in the industry. Mainly, it achieves high fuel savings and requires no driver interaction, has no moving parts, and works 100% of the time. Other benefits we see are with durability; it has a low profile, avoiding collision damage with dock doors or other trailers, and uses durable polymer materials that we expect will stand up to the punishments in trucking. From an engineering standpoint, it is evident the Michelin team has worked hard on the Energy Guard system.
Results for Any Carrier
Carriers can trust the test results are reliable for other tractor-trailer configurations, as they are not specific to MVT’s fleet. During testing, vehicles were configured to represent the current industry standard and did not include wheel covers or tractor wheel side fairings. Carriers can find directions on calculating their own fuel savings in the report or contact MVT Solutions with questions.
Independent Third Party Testing
MVT Solutions fuel economy testing is independent, 3rd party testing. We do not receive any payment from the sale of products tested. To learn more about the test, view the report above or contact us.
